The goal of each level is to get Fireboy and Watergirl safely to their respective doors at the end. If either one of them perishes in the level, you'll need to restart it. To get the best score, you need to collect all the diamonds and reach the end within a certain time.

A majority of the hazards that you'll encounter are color-coded. Fireboy can move through anything red and Watergirl can move through anything blue. Both of them are vulnerable to anything green. Getting through levels requires moving over platforms and jumping to new heights. Portals link two areas and both characters can use them. There are also level elements that the characters can interact with on contact. They can push blocks around, flip levers, and stand on switches which can have differing effects. The important thing is that the two reach the end together.

Tips and Tricks

You really need to look at the layout of the level so that you can determine the order in which the characters should progress.
